Activities and Societies: Code Club Volunteer Coordinator // Voted CivSoc IStructE Rep // IStructE Tuesday Group Committee // Men's Volleyball 2nd Team // Voted 1st Year Course Rep

In 3rd year, I took Sustainable Construction as my optional unit and undertook a research project on the vulnerability of maritime freight transport networks, under Dr. Agarwal's supervision. I was elected IStructE Rep. In this role, I was one of two students responsible for organising our society's first ever Graduate and Undergraduate Recruitment Evening. I was also invited to sit on the committee for the Tuesday Group (SW England IStructE Young Members) committee as a Student Rep…

In 2nd year, I chose to take Understanding Architecture, which I particularly enjoyed. I excelled in Computational Modelling, obtaining 84%, the highest grade in my cohort. In 1st year, I chose to study Sustainable Development. I was elected as Course Rep for Civil Engineering and played for TUBES intermural football team.

Volunteer Experience

  • Bristol Hub - Project Coordinator

    Bristol Hub - Project Coordinator

    Code Club

    - 1 year 1 month

    Education

This programme aims to teach the Scratch and Python coding languages to primary school children from disadvantaged backgrounds in and around Bristol. I moved to a role as Project Coordinator, helping to foster relationships with new schools whilst still getting involved directly in volunteer coordination and teaching directly.

    Bristol Hub - Volunteer Coordinator

    Code Club

    - 1 year 1 month

    Education

Confident after my good grades in 2nd years Computational Modelling, I decided to apply to be part of the Bristol Hub Code Club Committee. My role as Volunteer Coordinator was to assist in the recruitment and training of volunteer teachers, and to attend the schools we had partnerships with to teach Scratch & Python to kids

  • Vulnerability of Maritime Infrastructure: A Network Science Approach

International Symposia for Next Generation Infrastructure

This paper aims to analyse the vulnerability of global shipping network and the impact of hazards such as bunker fuel price rises and under-utilisation.

A model of the maritime network is built using the commercial schedule of a major shipping company. This uses a network science approach where each port is represented as a node and an edge represents service between the connecting ports. Edges weights are derived using an improved model of the transport costs. Different centrality measures and their distribution form the basis of performance assessment of the network and the ports.

It is observed that (a) the global operations depend on the continued availability of a small percentage of the ports and (b) the changes in bunker fuel prices and utilisation on the network result in different global port hierarchies. These findings have potential uses in improving the network resilience and financial risk management. Finally, several port improvement scenarios are examined and their priority determined based on global operations.

Was mainly responsible for undertaking the calibration and validation of a base year model in PTV Visum for County Wexford against observed counts using excel-based dashboards. Also worked alongside Mott MacDonald colleagues to test various corridor options against the Do Minimum and co-authored TMR (summarized and referred to in link).

Modelled two clean air zone (CAZ) interventions:

    1. a clean air zone covering cars, buses, coaches, and taxis

    2. A Class C clean air zone covering buses, coaches, taxis, and goods vehicles

These were both assessed using the 2021 baseline as a starting point and applying trip matrix adjustments based upon JAQU guidance. Other supporting packages concerning active travel support, road closures, bus-based P&R, taxi only areas, and parking policy were also…

    Produced a technical note:

    1. Summarizing the SEWTM base year (2015) model outputs supplied to Ricardo for use in developing an initial base year air quality model

    2. Outlining the approach and assumptions used in preparing 2021 baseline forecasts

    3. Explaining how highway trip matrices have been divided into compliant / non-compliant engine standards for subsequent air quality modelling purposes

    4. Setting out the methods used for assessing Clean Air Strategy Package transport interventions on the highway network, and the methods used for assessing the car-based and the goods vehicle-based CAZ

Captained the University of Bristol's team at an earthquake engineering competition for Undergraduates in Taipei, Taiwan, in which we received a Quake-Resistant Certificate. We were the only European team to enter and had the chance to visit monuments related to earthquake engineering, such as the Longteng Bridge and the 921 Memorial Park.
